| A leading Canadian artist who now lives at Wolfville, Nova Scotia. As a young war artist in the Second World War he began to develop his distinctive style, which combines precise realism and effective compositions with a subtle expression of his subject-matter - and this in such universal terms that he is internationally recognized as one of the foremost painters of his time. He has also contributed notably to the arts in Canada by his teaching and his service on national cultural bodies. (This is promotion within the Order). |
