His original work on neutron scattering was recognized with the 1994 Nobel Prize in physics. This research influenced the development of infrared detectors, computers and solid-state physics as well as the careers of many young nuclear physicists. Today he focuses his enquiring mind on energy conservation, waste disposal and the philosophy of science. This is a promotion within the Order.

A Professor of Physics at McMaster University, he has also served with Atomic Energy of Canada. His pioneering work on the motion of atoms in crystals has won him worldwide acclaim. His many honours include a Guggenheim Tory medal of the Royal Society of Canada.
