His Excellency Jean-Daniel Lafond to carry on Rideau Hall’s commitment to promoting the excellence of Canada’s wine industryMarch 3, 2006 OTTAWA – His Excellency Jean-Daniel Lafond will participate in the annual celebration of Ontario wines at Cuvée Weekend from March 3-5 in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. Mr. Lafond will offer brief remarks and present the Cuvée Awards for Best Gewürztraminer and Best Sauvignon Blanc at the Cuvée Gala on Saturday, March 4. While in the Niagara Region, His Excellency will also visit a number of wineries as well as the Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute at Brock University, the Niagara College Teaching Winery and the Niagara Culinary Institute. Their Excellencies The Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada and Jean-Daniel Lafond host hundreds of events in the course of a year to honour Canadians from all walks of life, to recognize excellence and accomplishment and to receive Canadian and foreign dignitaries. Through its creative menus at such events, Rideau Hall highlights the best of Canada’s wine, cheeses and other regional products. “It is with great enthusiasm that the Governor General and I agreed to continue the promotion of Canadian cuisine and wine at Rideau Hall that was championed by former Governor General Adrienne Clarkson and John Ralston Saul,” says Jean-Daniel Lafond. “We look forward to expanding the appreciation for Canadian wines all across our country, particularly as we complete official visits to every province and territory over the course of the next few months. The best way of promoting our wines starts with our own pride in the product.” By attending festivals such as Cuvée Weekend, Rideau Hall discovers the best established and emerging Canadian wines. The wines served at Rideau Hall are from Canada’s two primary wine producing regions – the Niagara Region in Ontario and the Okanagan Region in British Columbia. -30- Media information |
