Governor General urges reflection and solidarity at UNESCO

October 2, 2009

OTTAWA—Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, will deliver a speech before the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), at UNESCO Headquarters, Salle des Actes, in Paris, on Monday, October 5, at 3:00 p.m. (local time).

Her Excellency is delighted by UNESCO’s invitation to speak on cultural diversity and solidarity, themes that are dear to her heart. “UNESCO’s mission has never been as important, as crucial, as it is today, at this point in our collective history, when it is vital that we urge the creative forces within our societies to reflect and take action, so that we might forge new and highly desirable, if not essential, bonds of solidarity and share their promises,” she specified.

The Governor General will also open an exhibit on cultural diversity. The vernissage will take place at 4:15 p.m. (local time) at UNESCO Headquarters.
