He has devoted a lifetime to the provision of medical care in remote areas of Newfoundland and Labrador through the International Grenfell Association and continued his dedicated service to the province during his recent tenure as Lieutenant-Governor of Newfoundland, the first native of Labrador to be appointed to the position. (This is a promotion within the Order). |

Former director of northern medical services for the International Grenfell Association. For a life devoted to medicine, first in the navy and then in his native Labrador where he has travelled by dog team, hospital boat and air ambulance to treat Inuit, Indians and settlers. |
