The Ballroom
Patrons of the Performing Arts
Canada's
Governors General have typically been enthusiastic patrons of the arts. Lord Dufferin was no exception. Once construction
of the Ballroom was completed, he quickly put it to use. As these engravings show, the great room was easily converted into
a temporary theatre or concert hall.
In the audience you can see Lord and Lady Dufferin seated in the front row, enjoying the performance. Their support for
music, dance and theatre began a tradition that continues today.
