The Reception Room
Ramon John Hnatyshyn,
Governor
General 1990-1995
The Right Honourable Ramon John Hnatyshyn (1934-2002) was a lawyer and a federal Cabinet Minister before his appointment
to Rideau Hall. The first person of Ukrainian descent to become Governor General, he worked to promote pride in Canadian
multiculturalism.
He and his wife, Gerda, were deeply committed to making Rideau Hall more accessible to visitors. Mrs. Hnatyshyn, in particular,
was determined that the official residence should be a showcase for Canadians. The Hnatyshyns also demonstrated a dedicated
commitment to cultural activities by establishing the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards.
Note: A more complete biographical note on Ramon John Hnatyshyn can be accessed
